Editing

Pick an editor, cut AI clips to a rhythm, match their colors, and run a final edit checklist.

Use CapCut for fast social videos and DaVinci Resolve for anything longer or anything that needs color work. Both are free. Generate clips a little longer than you need, then cut them short: AI shots look best in the edit when you leave before they start to drift.

Our pick: start in CapCut if your video is a Short, a Reel or a TikTok under a minute. Move to Resolve free when you need several tracks of audio, real color correction or a video longer than a minute or two. Buy Resolve Studio only when you want its AI tools or want Claude Code to drive the editor.

Which AI tools work in free Resolve is disputed. One review says IntelliTrack and Voice to Subtitle work in the free version; another lists the Neural Engine as Studio only. Check Blackmagic's comparison page before you buy.

Resolve Studio 21.1 with Claude Code

Since September 2026, Resolve Studio 21.1 has a built in MCP server, so an AI assistant can operate the editor for you.

  • Setup: File, then Setup AI Assistants. It works with Claude Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT Codex, Antigravity and Grok.
  • Blackmagic's example tasks: render several formats, batch rename clips, add markers and export them to CSV, apply a LUT across clips, check delivery settings, reframe to 9:16.
  • Studio only. The free edition still has the console scripting API.
  • Blackmagic warns that scripts the assistant writes get the same disk and network access as the assistant itself.

A hands on test of Claude Code driving Resolve (Implicator, 19 Aug 2026) found it good at project setup, imports, markers, rough cuts from a timestamped transcript (one 50 second clip went to about 27 seconds) and applying a LUT. It failed at placing silence markers, left clips detached, cropped on the wrong side of a face and could not build Color page nodes. One unsupervised graphics pass took 1 hour 38 minutes and still needed fixes.

Treat it as a supervised operator: give it the boring, repeatable jobs, work on a copy of the project, and keep earlier timelines so you can go back.

Prompt
In the open Resolve project, duplicate the timeline "Cut v3" as "Cut v4" and work only on v4.
Add a marker at every shot change and export the markers to markers.csv.
Apply the LUT "film-look.cube" to every clip on video track 1.
Do not delete or move any clip. Report what you changed when done.

A community MCP server for free Resolve (davinci-resolve-ai-bridge-mcp, MIT license) also exists. Its tool list changes fast, so check it before you rely on it.

Pacing and cutting on beat

AI clips hide their flaws when they are short. Cut early and often.

  • Hook in the first 1 to 3 seconds. Several blogs agree; none is a study.
  • Change something every 1 to 2 seconds early on: a new angle, a zoom, a caption. This comes from one informal analysis of 50 viral AI videos.
  • Generate 3 to 6 second shots, use 2 to 3 seconds of each. The MindStudio guide puts it as cutting before the emotion needs it.
  • Trim the first few frames. Generations often start soft.
  • Cut on motion, not at the end of a sentence.
  • Keep screen direction. If a character walks left to right in one shot, keep that direction in the next (the 180 degree rule).
  • Aim for 30 to 55 seconds for a Short. Under 15 seconds often ends before viewers care (one source).

To cut on the beat, mark the beats first and snap your cuts to them. Use quick cuts in loud parts and longer holds in quiet parts.

AI Detect Music Beats adds beat markers you can snap to. The AI Music Editor stretches or shortens a track to the length you need. It works best on music with a clear beat, and results improve if you rough trim the track first.

Keep an editable timeline in every case. When the numbers show viewers leaving at second 3, you want to recut the opening, not regenerate the whole video.

Match colors in the right order

Clips from different models, or from different sessions of the same model, rarely match in color. The order matters more than the tool.

Upscale first, if you plan to

One source upscales before grading so the grade is done on the final pixels. See Finishing.

Balance each clip

Fix exposure and white balance on every clip and read the scopes, not just your screen.

Pick one hero clip

Choose the shot that looks closest to what you want.

Match every other clip to it

Match neutrals and skin tones first. In Resolve, right click the hero clip and use Shot Match, then check skin tones on the scopes. In Premiere, use Lumetri Color Match.

Add the look last

Apply your LUT or creative grade only now. A LUT on unmatched clips keeps the mismatch, it just tints it.

Unify the texture

AI output is often too sharp, with plastic looking skin. A light blur plus film grain across all clips makes them sit together.

Write it down

Log which model made each clip, the reference frame and your settings, so new shots can be matched later.

Transitions to avoid

A hard cut is your default. Cuts hide drift between shots, and fast cut formats are the ones that work best with AI footage.

  • Slow dissolves across an extension join. Extensions are not frame exact. Holding on the join shows the jump. Cut there instead.
  • Speed ramps that rely on frame interpolation over fast action. Interpolation ghosts on fast motion.
  • Flashy effect transitions on every cut. Viewers already criticize AI and code made videos for being overcrowded and effects driven.
  • Cuts that flip screen direction. A character who suddenly walks the other way reads as a mistake.

Original edits count

Meta counts minor edits such as borders, captions or speed changes as unoriginal. Transitions and effects do not make reposted or templated footage original. Your story and structure do.

Edit checklist

Import and label

Name every clip by shot number and take, matching your take log.

Assembly cut

Put the best take of each shot in script order. Do not polish yet.

Trim

Cut the soft first frames and anything after the action ends. Most shots end up 2 to 3 seconds long.

Lay in temporary audio

Add the music or voice track and mark the beats or key lines.

Cut to the rhythm

Move cuts onto beats or onto motion. Check the hook in the first 1 to 3 seconds.

Fix continuity

Watch for screen direction flips, changing props and faces. Replace or cut around weak moments.

Color match

Follow the order above: balance, hero clip, match, look, texture.

Final audio

Replace temporary sound with the real audio and mix.

Watch it on a phone

Check text size, safe zones and pacing on the device your viewers use, then go to Finishing.
