30 second short story
A complete walkthrough of a 30 second animated story with a character sheet, a storyboard sheet and Seedance 2.5.
This recipe makes a 30 second story with two characters, six shots and no dialogue except one short line. You build the look once (character sheets and a storyboard sheet), then generate each shot in Seedance 2.5 with the same references. Expect about 16 USD of generation at API rates, or part of a Dreamina Basic month.
The brief
| Item | Choice |
|---|---|
| Logline | On a rainy afternoon, a girl sails her paper boat down the street, loses it in a drain, and her grandfather hands her a new one. |
| Length and format | 30 seconds, 16:9, 6 shots |
| Characters | MAI (9 year old girl) and ONG (her grandfather). Two characters is the safe maximum. |
| Style | Stylized 3D animated film look. Stylized characters pass moderation and hold identity better than photoreal ones. |
| Model | Seedance 2.5 in Dreamina. It accepts up to 50 references and clips of 4 to 30 seconds. |
| Editor | CapCut (free) or DaVinci Resolve (free) |
Budget
| Item | Amount | Cost at Seedance 2.5 API rates |
|---|---|---|
| Character sheets and storyboard sheet | 3 to 6 images | A few image credits |
| Draft takes at 480p | 6 shots x 3 takes x 5 s = 90 s | About 9.30 USD (0.103 USD/second) |
| Final takes at 720p | 30 s | About 6.90 USD (0.231 USD/second) |
| Total | About 16 USD |
Prices checked on 15 Oct 2026. The USD figures use the official BytePlus ModelArk rates for Seedance 2.5 as a yardstick. Dreamina does not publish credits per clip; it shows the cost before you press generate. Dreamina Basic in Vietnam is 187,200 VND for the first month, then 390,000 VND, for 4,161 credits a month. Write down the credit quote of your first clip and multiply by the number of takes in this table.
Tool stack: Dreamina (GPT Image 2.5 or Seedream for images, Seedance 2.5 for video), CapCut or Resolve for the edit, optional music from Suno Pro or a free library.
No real faces
Seedance 2.5 does not accept reference images or videos that contain real human faces. Design your characters as stylized or generated people from the start.
Walkthrough
Idea: one sentence, one turn
Write the logline above in one sentence. It has a hook (the boat on the window), a turn (the boat is lost) and a payoff (a new boat). Keep the second character to one shot. Scenes with several characters interacting can take 50 or more prompts and may not work at all, according to an experienced creator.
Shot list
Generate shots of 4 to 6 seconds and cut them shorter in the edit. Keep screen direction fixed: the boat always travels left to right.
| # | Time | Framing and camera | Action | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0 to 4 s | Close-up, static, 50mm | Paper boat on a rainy windowsill, MAI rises into frame behind it | Rain on glass |
| 2 | 4 to 9 s | Wide, static, 24mm | MAI in a yellow raincoat runs out onto a wet lane, holding the boat up | Rain, splashing steps |
| 3 | 9 to 14 s | Low angle medium, slow push in | MAI sets the boat in the gutter stream, it floats away to the right | Running water |
| 4 | 14 to 19 s | Tracking shot, left to right, low | The boat races along the stream, MAI runs behind, out of focus | Water, footsteps |
| 5 | 19 to 24 s | Close-up, static, 85mm | The boat slips into a drain, MAI stops, her face falls | Water gurgle, rain |
| 6 | 24 to 30 s | Medium two shot, slow push in | ONG holds out a new paper boat under his umbrella, MAI smiles | Rain on umbrella, one line |
Character sheets
Make one sheet per character before any video. Use a neutral grey background, four views at the same scale, and no text. Approve the sheet carefully: a wrong detail repeats in every shot.
Character model sheet, 16:9, neutral mid-grey seamless background, even soft
studio light from front-left, no text, no watermark, no other figures.
Four views of the same character at identical scale and head height:
(1) front full body, relaxed A-pose, (2) back full body, (3) front head and
shoulders close-up, (4) 90 degree left profile close-up.
Character: MAI, 9 year old girl, round face, short black bob with a straight
fringe, small red hair clip on the left, bright yellow hooded raincoat,
navy shorts, red rubber boots.
Style: stylized 3D animated film look, soft subsurface skin, clean shapes.Repeat for ONG: a thin man in his 70s with short white hair, round glasses, a grey cardigan and a large dark green umbrella. Keep the style line identical.
Storyboard sheet
One sheet keeps props and lighting consistent across panels, and costs far less than six separate frames. In one test, a 6 panel sheet cost 1 credit and took 32.5 seconds, while six single frames cost 6 credits, took over 3 minutes and broke prop continuity. Attach both character sheets.
A storyboard sheet: 3 columns x 2 rows, 6 equal 16:9 panels with thin white
borders, panel numbers 01 to 06 in the margin outside each panel.
Identity: the first attached image is MAI, the second is ONG. Keep faces,
hair, clothing and proportions identical in every panel.
Continuity lock: narrow residential lane, wet asphalt, rain, grey afternoon
light, palette of teal, yellow and warm grey, the same white paper boat
throughout, the boat always moves left to right.
Style: stylized 3D animated film look, not photographic.
01 close-up: paper boat on a rainy windowsill, MAI's face behind it.
02 wide: MAI runs out onto the wet lane holding the boat up.
03 low angle medium: MAI sets the boat in the gutter stream.
04 low tracking: the boat races along the stream, MAI blurred behind.
05 close-up: the boat slips into a drain, MAI looks sad.
06 medium two shot: ONG under his umbrella holds out a new paper boat.
No text inside the panels. No extra characters except where a panel describes them. Then rebuild only the 2 or 3 most important panels as full resolution keyframes for image to video. Restate the background in each one, or close-ups can inherit the grey backdrop of the character sheet.
Video prompts, one per shot
Seedance 2.5 syntax used below: @Image 1 names an upload in upload order, [0s to 2s] sets whole second timestamps, <> holds sound effects, {} holds dialogue, and "No BGM" and "No subtitles" are the supported negatives. Every prompt repeats the character, setting and style, because the model remembers nothing between shots. Upload MAI's sheet first, ONG's sheet second, and the storyboard panel third.
@Image 1 is MAI: use her face and hair only. @Image 3 is the storyboard panel:
use its framing and light only, ignore borders and numbers.
Close-up, static camera, 50mm. A white paper boat sits on a rainy windowsill
inside a small apartment, rain streaking down the glass behind it.
[0s to 2s] the boat stays still while raindrops run down the glass.
[2s to 4s] MAI, a 9 year old girl, rises into frame behind the boat and looks
out at the street.
Stylized 3D animated film look, grey afternoon light, palette of teal, yellow
and warm grey.
<rain tapping on glass> No BGM. No subtitles.@Image 1 is MAI: use her face, hair, yellow raincoat and red boots.
@Image 3 is the storyboard panel: use its framing only.
Wide shot, static camera, 24mm. A narrow residential lane after heavy rain,
wet asphalt, puddles. [0s to 5s] MAI runs out of a doorway on the left and
along the lane to the right, holding a white paper boat above her head, then
slows to a walk.
Stylized 3D animated film look, grey afternoon light, palette of teal, yellow
and warm grey.
<rain, small splashing footsteps> No BGM. No subtitles.@Image 1 is MAI: use her face, hair, yellow raincoat and red boots.
Low angle medium shot, slow push in. MAI crouches at the edge of a narrow
lane where rainwater runs along the gutter. [0s to 3s] she places a white
paper boat on the water. [3s to 5s] the boat drifts away to the right and
she watches it go, hands resting on her knees.
Stylized 3D animated film look, grey afternoon light, palette of teal, yellow
and warm grey.
<running water, rain> No BGM. No subtitles.@Image 1 is MAI: use her yellow raincoat and red boots.
Low tracking shot moving left to right at water level. A white paper boat
races along a rain-filled gutter on a narrow residential lane. MAI runs
behind it in the background, out of focus. [0s to 5s] the boat rocks over
small ripples and keeps moving right, the camera keeps pace.
Stylized 3D animated film look, grey afternoon light, palette of teal, yellow
and warm grey.
<rushing water, quick footsteps> No BGM. No subtitles.@Image 1 is MAI: use her face, hair and yellow raincoat.
Close-up, static camera, 85mm. A wet street drain at the edge of a narrow
lane. [0s to 2s] a white paper boat slides into the drain and disappears.
[2s to 5s] cut to MAI's face in close-up as she stops running, her smile
fades and she looks down.
Stylized 3D animated film look, grey afternoon light, palette of teal, yellow
and warm grey.
<water gurgling into the drain, rain> No BGM. No subtitles.@Image 1 is MAI: use her face, hair and yellow raincoat. @Image 2 is ONG:
use his face, glasses, grey cardigan and green umbrella.
Medium two shot, slow push in. On a wet narrow lane, ONG stands under a large
dark green umbrella and holds out a new paper boat folded from newspaper.
[0s to 3s] MAI looks up at him. [3s to 6s] she takes the boat and smiles,
ONG smiles back.
ONG says in English, warm and quiet: {Want another one?}
Stylized 3D animated film look, grey afternoon light, palette of teal, yellow
and warm grey.
<rain drumming on the umbrella> No BGM. No subtitles. For Vietnamese dialogue, write ONG says in Vietnamese and the line in Vietnamese; Seedance 2.5 supports Vietnamese dialogue.
Generate drafts first. Seedance 2.5 has a Draft mode that renders a 480p preview, then the final; it is billed as two tasks. Make 2 to 3 drafts per shot, keep the best, and change one thing per retry.
Alternative: Seedance 2.5 can make the whole 30 seconds in one pass from the storyboard sheet. Attach the sheet and both character sheets, and say "Create a 30 second video from the attached storyboard. Follow the panels strictly in reading order, about 5 seconds per panel. Do not render any text, numbers, panel borders or captions." One 30 second take at 720p costs about 6.90 USD at API rates, so try it once and fall back to per shot generation if one panel fails.
Editing
Import the six keepers into CapCut or Resolve in shot order. Trim the first few frames of every clip, because first frames are often soft. Cut each clip to the moment it works; 2 to 3 seconds on screen is often enough for shots 2 and 4. Check that the boat always moves left to right, so the cuts read as one journey.
Audio
Keep the native rain and water sounds from Seedance. Mute any music it added. For music, use a free library track (Pixabay or Freesound) for personal posts, or a Suno track made on a paid plan if you will publish commercially. Songs made on Suno's free plan never become commercially usable, even if you upgrade later.
Finishing
Export at 1080p, which is enough for web and social. If you rendered finals at 720p, either upscale or re-render only the keepers at 1080p (about 2.85 USD per 5 seconds at API rates). Add captions for the single line. A stylized, clearly animated video does not need YouTube's altered or synthetic content label; realistic scenes that never happened do.
What usually goes wrong
| Problem | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| MAI's face or coat changes between shots | Nothing anchors identity in that shot | Attach the character sheet to every shot and repeat her description in every prompt |
| Panel numbers or borders appear in the video | Labels sit inside the panel art | Keep numbers outside the panels and add "Do not render any text, numbers or panel borders" |
| Music appears even with "No BGM" | Seedance fills empty audio slots | Users report it invents or ignores audio in roughly 15 to 20% of runs; mute it in the edit |
| Prompt rejected | Moderation is strict (real faces, blood, some words) | Use stylized characters and plain descriptions of clothing and action |
| Hands look wrong when she places the boat | Hands are small, fast and complex | Keep hands still or out of frame, as in shot 3 |
| Later instructions ignored | Prompt too long | Keep each prompt to 60 to 100 words and put subject and action first |
Some testers found Seedance 2.5 worse than 2.0 at launch on motion and prompt adherence. If a shot keeps failing on 2.5, try the same prompt on Seedance 2.0 before rewriting it. Note that 2.0 ignores timestamps; use "Shot 1, Shot 2" instead.
